Picking the right type of bulb might be confusing, what with the many varieties in the market. The different types include CFLs, halogen, incandescent, and LEDs. Here, your OKC electrician is going to discuss each of the named types, to aid you in choosing what is perfect for you.

Incandescent bulbs

Incandescent bulbs are the most popular and can be found in almost all households. They give off a warm and steady glow. The average incandescent bulb can be used with a simmer and can last up to 1000 hours. It costs an average of $0.60 and emits a lot of heat. The visible light it emits is less than the heat. Because they are inefficient, these bulbs are being phased out in many parts of the world. In Australia, they were banned in November 2009 with the U.S following similar steps.

Halogen Bulbs

Halogen bulbs are considered to have more efficiency than incandescent bulbs. They last between 2,000 to 3,000 hours. They can be used with dimmers, but when the light is on full, the temperatures can get high, making them a possible fire hazard. A halogen bulb costs an average of $4. These bulbs have the best color rendering of unnatural light sources.

Compact Fluorescents (CFLs) are like normal fluorescent bulbs but with more efficiency and less heat. Most of them are not compatible with dimmers, but they have a life span of up to 10,000 hours. These bulbs are also capable of lasting eight times longer than the incandescent bulbs. They cost an average of $4 and significantly save your energy. However, CFLs have traces of mercury in them, so they require to be handled and disposed of carefully.

Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are not very popular because they are expensive. They cost between $20 -$80 for every bulb. They, however, have a very long life span, of between 25,000 - 50,000 hours. With such longevity, the price tag can be justified. They are highly efficient and emit minimal toxicity, making them ideal.

LIFX, is a new type of light bulb that is multi-coloured, energy-efficient and remote controlled. With a customized iOS or Android application, you have the power to switch on the bub, dim it, schedule it to switch on at particular times with different light intensities, or change colors. The LFX bulb is so advanced that it can pulse to the rhythm of your music and flash when you get a social media notification. The bulb is Wi-Fi enabled and uses on average a tenth of the amount of energy that regular bulbs use. The bulb is however quite pricey. It costs $69, but at that price, you will get 25 years of electricity and entertainment.
